KAPITEL 4
Die Reflexive Verben
Reflexive verbs are verbs that deal with ones’ self. In English, some examples of reflexive verbs are “he hurt himself” and “I dry myself off”. In both sentences, the verb was an action that you do to yourself. In German, the same principal is used. “Ich dusche mich”, or “I shower myself”, is an example of the reflexive verb in German.
When there is a reflexive verb (V), depending on which subject (S) is used – ich, du, er, sie, wir, ihr, or sie (they) – the reflexive pronoun (RP) will be either mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich.

Übung 3
Der Akkusativ
As you have probably learned in your English class, there are various sentence cases depending on what is happening in the sentence. Every sentence has a subject and a verb. While the subject is the noun or pronoun that is performing the action of the verb, the verb describes the action of the subject. But what receives the action of the verb? When Sam throws the ball, what is being thrown? Not Sam, but the ball. This word that receives the action is known as the direct object. The ball is the direct object in this sentence.
In order to have a direct object, there must be an action verb. Direct objects (DO) are always nouns or pronouns, and the verb is the indicator, with action verbs (AV) leading to direct objects and linking verbs (LV) leading to predicate nominatives or adjectives (PN/PA).

S LV PA
Betty was pretty.
S V A
The dog ran away.
S AV DO
Mike eats the cake.
Betty was pretty.
S V A
The dog ran away.
S AV DO
Mike eats the cake.
In the first example, there is no direct object because the verb is a linking verb with a predicate adjective. The second example contains an action verb, but ‘away’ is not a noun or a pronoun. Therefore, it cannot be a direct object. The third sentence shows the correct use of a direct object, with the action verb followed by, and lending action to, a noun.
The same technique applies to German. The only difference is that the noun’s article has to be put into the accusative case.
Here is a list of the article changes.
