Adjectives
When an adjective is in front of a noun in German, it must have an ending put on it. This may seem familiar, but we did not specifically learn this in first year. We used adjectives after a noun. Like this: "Das Auto ist rot." In this section we are going to look at adjectives in front of nouns. Like this: "Das rote Auto." or "Das ist ein rotes Auto."

Komparativ und Superlativ
Adjectives and adverbs have three forms: The base form, comparative form, and superlative form. The base form could be any adjective. (ex. red) The comparative would be (redder) and the superlative would be (reddest).
In German the comparative is formed by adding (er) to the base form. The superlative is formed by adding (ste), (este) if ending the base form ends in d, and (t) if the base form ends in an ß.
Example:
Base form
Comparative Superlative |
alt
älter älteste |
groß
größer größte |
jung
jünger jüngste |
Some adjectives and adverbs break the rules completely. Their base forms change as they go into the comparative and superlative. Like good, better and best.
Example:
Base
Comparative Superlativeb |
bald
eher eheste |
gern
lieber liebste |
gut
besser beste |
hoch
höher höchste |
nah
näher nächste |
viel
mehr meiste |

Examples: Der Film ist interessant.
Der Tag wird lang.
Das Wetter bleibt jetzt schön.
Predicate adjectives follow the verbs sein, werden, or bleiben and modify the subject of the sentence. They never add declensional endings.

heiß
heißer heißest- |
hot
hotter hottest |
schön
schöner schönst- |
beautiful
more beautiful most beautiful |
Adjectives and adverbs have three degrees: base form (positive), comparative, and superlative. The comparative is formed by adding –er to the base form. The superlative is formed by adding –st to the base form. The ending –est is added to words ending in –d (wildest-), -t (ältest-), or –s (groß) or –z (kürzest–). The superlative of groß is größt.
Base Form
Comparative Superlative |
alt
älter ältest– |
groß
größer größt– |
jung
jünger jüngst– |
Many one–syllable adjectives or adverbs with the stem vowel a, o, or u add an umlaut in the comparative and superlative. These adjectives and adverbs are noted in the end vocabulary as follows: kalt (ä).
Base Form
Comparative Superlative |
bald
eher ehest- |
gern
lieber liebst- |
gut
besser best- |
hoch
höher höchst– |
Several adjectives and adverbs are irregular in the comparative and superlative.
Hörst du lieber Rock oder klassische Musik?
Do you prefer to listen to rock or classical music?
To express preference about doing something, Germans use the word lieber plus a verb.
Die meisten Deutschen lernen in der Schule Englisch.
Most Germans learn English in school.
Note that the adjective meist– is preceded by the definite article.
Commands
There are three different ways to say a command in German: if you’re talking to one person, multiple people or saying it formally.
If you are talking to one person and commanding them you use the du form of a verb. First, conjugate the verb into the du form. After you conjugate the verb, take off the ‘st’ at the end of the word.
Modell 1
gehen
machen |
du gehst
du machst |
Geh ins Bett!
Mach die Hausaufgabe! |
**If it ends in an ‘s’ or ß then just take off the ‘t’
lesen
|
du liest
|
Lies das Buch!
|
When you talk to a group or multiple people and are commanding them, you would use the ‘ihr’ form of a verb. There is no change you need to do to the verb.
schreiben
|
ihr schriebt
|
Schreibt die Aufgabe!
|
When saying a formal command you have to use the ‘Sie’ form of the verb. However, unlike the other two types, you say ‘Sie’ after the verb.
kommen
|
Sie kommen hier
|
Kommen Sie hier, bitte!
|
Ex: Kommen Sie hier.
